Which suspension bushings are better: polyurethane or rubber?

The choice between polyurethane and rubber bushings depends on your preferences, operating conditions and driving style. Both materials have their pros and cons, which are worth considering. Polyurethane bushings are incredibly durable and resistant to temperature changes and aggressive environments. Rubber is cheaper, but less reliable in the long run.

Why does the suspension feel stiffer after replacing the bushings?

This subjective feeling can occur because worn and damaged parts have been replaced with new ones. It happens regardless of whether polyurethane or rubber parts were installed. And when all the suspension elements in an assembly are replaced, the feeling can be even stronger. So it depends less on the material of the part and more on the effect of renewing the suspension assembly.

Why do control arm bushings fail?

Bushings can fail for a whole host of reasons related to their design, operating conditions and the effect of the environment. Constant oscillation, shocks and vibration from the road gradually break down the rubber or polyurethane part of the bushing, leading to a loss of damping properties. This natural process speeds up with frequent driving on bad roads with lots of potholes and bumps. Rubber bushings are especially vulnerable to moisture, road salt, grease and gasoline. Excessive load on the suspension also has a negative effect, whether from overloading the car or from an aggressive driving style, especially at high speed or in corners.

What can I use to lubricate bushings so they don't squeak?

To get rid of that annoying bushing squeak, it is important to choose the right lubricant, one that not only eliminates the noise but also does not harm the material (rubber or polyurethane). The following types of lubricant have proven themselves: Silicone Polyurethane- or Teflon-based Lithium, an excellent option for polyurethane Graphite, used for metal components Categorically avoid oil-based or mineral compounds, as well as penetrating fluids such as WD-40, as they can destroy the bushing material.

How can I tell that the bushings are dead?

The signs of bushing failure can appear in different ways, depending on the degree of wear and the operating conditions. While driving, especially over bumps, you start to hear suspicious sounds: squeaking or knocking. The car may behave unstably, especially in corners, when it starts to "wander" or loses grip on the road. Tires may wear unevenly. The car may vibrate when braking, accelerating or at high speed. Steering wheel free play increases. Changes in body height may be noticeable. On visual inspection of the bushings themselves you can see cracks, tears or deformation. If the rubber or polyurethane is damaged or there are signs of extrusion, it is time to replace them. A professional mechanic can also take a test drive and pinpoint the problem.
