Does Polyurethane Squeak? Debunking the Myth

Author: Yehor Medunytsia · 05.05.2026

Short answer: Polyurethane doesn't squeak on its own - squeaking comes from parts that are poorly made or poorly installed. The "squeaky material" reputation comes from cheap, multi-piece parts and installation without grease. Quality PolyPro polyurethane parts, installed correctly, don't squeak.

Where the "Polyurethane Squeaks" Reputation Comes From

When a car owner replaces rubber suspension parts with polyurethane ones and hears a squeak, the logical conclusion is: "polyurethane squeaks." But the material isn't actually the cause.

Rubber parts squeak too - if dirt gets between the bushing and the metal. Rubber is just softer and masks the problem longer by absorbing friction within its own structure. Polyurethane is denser - so it signals a problem with the installation or the part's quality right away. This creates the impression that the material itself is at fault. It isn't - the part or the installation is.

Two Different Causes for Two Different Parts

Polyurethane suspension parts come in two types, and they squeak for different reasons.

Sway bar bushings - an open part that contacts the metal bar directly. If grease isn't applied during installation and the mounting surface isn't cleaned, dirt gets trapped between the bushing and the bar - it acts as an abrasive and causes squeaking. Rubber bushings squeak the same way in this exact situation. For a full breakdown of causes and fixes: Why Do Sway Bar Bushings Squeak?

Bushings (silent blocks) - a sealed part where the polyurethane insert must be bonded to the metal sleeve. Squeaking only happens if the insert has separated from the metal, or if the part was made without bonding - assembled like building blocks from separate pieces. Grease won't help here. Why Cheap Polyurethane Parts Squeak More Often

There are two approaches on the market to manufacturing polyurethane bushings (silent blocks).

The right one: the polyurethane insert is poured and vulcanized directly into the metal sleeve, bonding tightly to it. This is how original manufacturers and PolyPro make them. A bushing like this can't squeak from separation - the insert and the metal are a single part.

The wrong one: a polyurethane cylinder is pressed into the metal sleeve without bonding. The part is held in place by friction alone. Vibration, shock loads, and temperature changes eventually cause the insert to start rotating or separating - and squeaking. These are the parts responsible for the "polyurethane squeaks" reputation.

The same logic applies to sway bar bushings: a low-quality part will have an imprecise diameter - the fit will be loose, creating play and squeaking regardless of grease.

Polyurethane vs. Rubber: Which Squeaks More?

Neither material comes out ahead on squeaking - both squeak with poor installation or a bad part. But there's a real difference in durability: rubber parts wear out after 50,000-80,000 km, while PolyPro polyurethane parts last 150,000-250,000 km - 3 to 5 times longer.

Rubber "stays quiet" longer under mediocre installation because the material is soft. Polyurethane shows a problem right away - that's not a flaw, it's simply being upfront about a problem. With the same installation quality and the same part quality, polyurethane parts are just as quiet, but last significantly longer.

Polyurethane does have its own weak points besides squeaking, like heat and UV sensitivity - see the full breakdown: Polyurethane Bushings: Durability, Weaknesses & Care Guide.

How PolyPro Eliminates Squeaking

PolyPro manufactures polyurethane parts the same way original manufacturers do: the insert is bonded to the metal sleeve - no "building blocks." Sway bar bushings come with grease that pushes out dirt and seals the mounting surface during installation. Diameter control eliminates play from an imprecise fit.

If squeaking does show up - PolyPro offers a 12-month warranty with no mileage limit. You can return the part and get a replacement.
